I get asked a lot how to customize your Facebook Page (that’s with a capital “P”, not to be confused with your personal profile). I purchased your book last week and am very disappointed. It is 2 years old, for Facebook that is a long time. I tried creating a developers account and got as far as creating my Facebook Platform Developer Test Account. But I cannot find anywhere in my new account that offers a link to Developers. When I type in http://www.facebook.com/developers I end up back at my new wall, again with no developers options. What gives?
Rick, that is the only chapter of the book that is out-dated. In fact, that
section has been updated even in the last couple months, and has changed
multiple times since the book was written. It would have been near
impossible to keep that up to date. That said, I'm going to see if I can
get a blog post together on how to set up a Facebook App. The main takeaway
(also said in that chapter): Go to http://developers.facebook.com, and click
the green button. Then, follow the directions. It's really pretty simple.
Thanks for your prompt reply Jesse. It appeared to me the “Start Building Your Site” button was for adding “Connect” to my website. It is confusing. On that page are links to “Integrate Facebook into your site using Connect” (which is what the green “Start Building Your Site” button had me doing) and “Create an application that runs inside Facebook”. With apps that can take over a site or infest my computer, I'm leary of just clicking on links and installing apps that I don't know what they do, especially on my own website. So, I kept clicking the later link, only to be taken back to my home page.
