As part of Kynetx’s Facebook App contest I wrote a simple browser extension that you can install on Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Firefox, which allows you to, in addition to the “retweet”, “favorite”, and “reply” links you see when you mouse over a Tweet, you can also now “like” the Tweet as well. What does this do? It puts it on Facebook, of course! Here’s me liking one of Jolie O’Dell’s Tweets (she had the most like-worthy Tweet in my stream at the time):
The plugin was very simple to write on Kynetx’s platform – Brad Hintze explains it well over here, but to put it simple, all I had to do is distinguish through a selector where to put the like buttons and put Facebook’s default like button iframe code in where each Tweet is. With some simple jQuery I could identify the permalink for the Tweet, insert that as the href for the like button, and voila, each like links right back to the Tweet on Twitter.com. The like shows up in my profile like this:
Of course, there is much more I can do with this – at the moment I’m using Kynetx’s Facebook API to greet you by name and tell you how to use the plugin. I anticipate also enabling a “post to facebook” checkbox below the status update box in Twitter, and because you’ve authorized your Facebook account through Kynetx you can now cross-post to Facebook, straight from Twitter.com. Or, what if I wanted to, in my Twitter settings, pull my profile pic from my Facebook profile and upload that to Twitter as my profile pic? I could use Kynetx’s Facebook API to access the profile picture, then use Kynetx’s Twitter API to upload that pic up to Twitter. Not just that, but all the changes, written in one single language and written only once, get compiled into Chrome plugins, Firefox plugins, Internet Explorer plugins, as well as Information Cards and bookmarklets anyone can install to completely customize the Twitter.com experience to work with Facebook. What are some other ways you can see this extended?
If you haven’t tried out Kynetx yet go check it out. This was very simple to write – you can see the source code I used over on the Kynetx blog. Feel free to add to it and make your own creations – I’ll just release this all under the GPL, so change away. Oh, and if you’re not a developer go install the extension and like your favorite Twitter posts!
I’ve uploaded the extensions for IE, Firefox, and Chrome all to this zip file – feel free to download and enjoy! It’s a work in progress (and mostly a hobby), so please send me your ideas and feedback.
Disclosure: I won a $200 Amazon Gift Certificate for entering this app into Kynetx’s Facebook app contest

How does the object enter the Open Graph? What og: type are you using? Article?
AJ, it doesn't need any Open Graph tags. I specify the URL for the Tweet's
permalink in the href field and Facebook takes the
that page for display on Facebook. I wish I could configure that further
though – it's not possible in Facebook's current API.

Having some difficulties.
Checked Chrome Extensions website for this as a new extension, seemed the obvious place to look. Can't find it there.
Downloaded zip file. Unzipped. Ran setup.exe (after closing all open apps)
Checked applications on Start menu. No new apps.
Two new files created in install directory. TwitterBook.xpi & TwitterBook.crx
Opened Chrome, viewed Twitter home page on web. Nothing.
Viewed single tweet. Nothing.
Tried “upload unpacked extension” in Chrome, selecting install directory: error message: “Manifest file is missing or unreadable”
Suggestions please?

Liss, if you're using Chrome, you should just need to double click on
TwitterBook.crx after unzipping it and it should automatically prompt you to
install. After that you should see it if you type chrome://extensions in
your url bar. I admit I haven't tested the IE plugin – I'll take a look at
that.
hi Jesse, great extension! I'm using it in Google Chrome and it's a little bit glitchy – the “like” button doesn't appear on all tweets and sometimes I'll have to refresh the page to get the button to show up at all.
Nicky, I agree it has some improvement to go. I'll get fixes in shortly
that should fix those automatically for you (one more advantage of using
Kynetx to write these plugins).
Thank you so much Jesse. I got it installed following your advice. Will play with getting Chrome to display the button 🙂
So does this not enter Facebook's Open Graph? It's not an actual object?

AJ, not unless Twitter adds their pages to the Graph. I can't do that with
an extension.
Thanks so much! It's truly an awesome idea – love it 🙂

Hello!
I'm very keen to try this out, but I can't get it to work. I use Chrome, but after unzipping the zip file, my computer doesn't recognize the crx files (only the setup.exe file), instead just sending me straight to notepad when I try and open them up.
I'm not the most tech-savvy person in the world, so apologies if I'm missing something obvious, but I'd appreciate it if you had any tips. (I'm in South Korea, if that makes any difference.)
Thanks
Niels

I like the idea Jesse, I added the extension to Firefox, I allowed the connection to Facebook and see the screen pop out giving instructions as to how to hover over the tweet but I can't see any Facebook button yet. Does it depend on which Firefox version you may have?
Cool idea, and warm congratulations!

Nice idea. Gave it a try but am uninstalling it because of the pop-up that appears every single time I load a profile page on Twitter.com.

Is there a way to turn that pop-up off that I may be missing?
I'll be doing more updates to it moving forward. This was just a proof of
concept at first, but I'd like to make it better.

Hi Jesse,
I installed the twitterbook app but it never worked.
I would like to remove it.
I uninstalled from Facebook and Twitter but i keep getting a black popup whenever i am on my twitter account.
This popup is saying “The application TwitterBook (a188x1)from Jesse Stay is requesting that you authorize Facebook to share your personal information with it …..”. I keep on clicking the “no thanks button” but it keeps on showing up.
I don't understand how it is possible as the app is no longer in my twitter & facebook settings.
I use Firefox.
Do you know how i can resolve this issue pls?
Thanks,
Isabelle
