What is the one feature FriendFeed must have to go mainstream? E-mail. FriendFeed must have some sort of notification when someone comments on anything you post. Obviously, this should be a feature you can turn off, but people will continue to think FriendFeed is too complicated until this is in place.
Facebook has this currently – any time someone comments on a status update or anything I post, I get an e-mail from Facebook with the comment right in the e-mail, giving me the option to respond on Facebook. FriendFeed already does this, sort of, if you haven’t been on the service for awhile. However, there is no way to get an e-mail on every comment sent for certain posts. People are used to this, and as long as you can turn it off, it will not be construed as spam. If FriendFeed is to compete, they must support e-mail, on every post you send to the service.

Current e-mail preferences are:
Send me email when people subscribe to my FriendFeed
Send me email when people comment on my feed and I haven't logged in recently
Send me my FriendFeed via email (options are “daily” and “weekly”)
Presumably the second option could be expanded to provide the functionality that you want.
I like the idea of notifications but using multiple services would be far better than just email. I'm not sure email will be the best way to notify people and especially only through email.
BTW I'm still not feeling Friendfeed so anything to help me connect would be welcome.
Not sure I agree that FriendFeed *needs* email, but it wouldn't hurt. The more FriendFeed allows the end user to customize the email options, the better. For instance, I don't want to see an email after every comment on every thread I start. Perhaps if FriendFeed added an option to he thread (customizable by each user) to turn on/off updates and then take it even a step further to email as they come in, every 30 min, every 2 hours, etc. This allows anyone who wants to keep track of a thread to be able to, not just the person who started the thread. That's my 2 cents.
Ontario, correct – the second option isn't enough. I need the ability
to receive every comment to items I post via e-mail – they may not
think I want the e-mail, but I don't think they should guess for me.
Their competition is out-doing them on this.
I'm shocked this function doesn't exist already. Having a “Send me email when people comment on my feed and I haven't logged in recently” seems silly without the broader “Send me email *whenever* people comment on my feed” option.
Ash,
Here's the reason for FriendFeed – every single time someone comments
or likes something you post, it goes right back up to the top of your
friends' FriendFeed list. It has the potential for re-exposure for
every activity that happens. In addition, search on FriendFeed is
more powerful because it covers more sites than just Twitter – add a
search to your RSS and you'll get updates for everyone that mentions
that term on FriendFeed. If you need more organization, check out http://beta.friendfeed.com
