Today, on the Twitter developer’s mailing list, in response to the question:
“it would be cool to have Twitter groups so you could @group and d group”
It was answered by one of Twitter’s Engineers:
” This is on our radar, and third party developers have already done
several different implementations of this feature.”
This is on our Radar… Does this mean Twitter is looking to add group functionality in the future? I have heard rumors, but never a confirmation like this. This also brings to mind the question of what about other developers writing apps to provide this functionality? Should Twitter leave this functionality out, and instead allow developers to create their own solutions?

Personally, I think that they'll probably see which of the third-party implementations they like and use it as inspiration (should the actually move forward with it). That said, their “radar” should pretty much just be “make the service reliable”.
One could also make a compelling argument for not complicating a service that (aside from outages and other technical snafu's) has really done well *because it's so simple*. For that reason, I think adding groups would probably be a mistake.
Interesting to know that they're thinking about it, though.
Great post, cheers!
