Wordpress “Socialize Me!” Plugin Connects Your Blog
Hi - you seem to be new here. Please subscribe to my RSS feed to get the latest technology news and information!
You can check me out on Identi.ca, Facebook, or FriendFeed to see what I'm up to. Thanks for visiting!
I’ve recently been looking for better ways to connect my blog into the social sphere. I feel the easier my readers can connect with me, talk with me, ask questions, etc., the more personal my blog becomes. You’ll notice I’ve added some pretty little icons to the right that show the networks I belong to and, if you’re on them, you can meet me there. I will be adding more as I create new icons.
Today I came across a nifty new Wordpress plugin from the guys at blah, blah! technology called Socialize Me!. Socialize Me! collects your user names and profile urls from about 20 to 30 different social networks, and then detects if the users visiting your Wordpress blog belong to those social networks. If so, with some code you insert into your Wordpress template, a message appears to those users notifying them that you also belong to their social network, inviting them to come visit you.
I have thus far been unsuccessful in testing this - I can’t tell if it’s because I already belong to the social networks, or if I’ve entered in the wrong information. If you visit the Stay N’ Alive blog and see a message inviting you to visit me on any of my social networks, please let me know in the comments below. You can try the plugin yourself at:

You don't think people will be creeped out that you're fishing their computer's cookies? You've got that Amazon badge that must have picked up my name - that weirded me out enough.
I think you overestimate people's enthusiasm for being always connected, all the time. If it was opt-in when somebody arrives on your page then more power to you. But there's no need to go digging around in my machine to see where else I've been when you don't need to know that. Let's maintain that last fascade of privacy.

Matt,
Oh come on - you're saying it's my fault (or the plugin's fault) that Facebook or Bebo or others are storing cookies on your computer? It's not like I'm reading your password information or anything - it's something supported by the browser and welcomed by the development community. If there's an issue, I suggest you take that up with W3C or Facebook or Bebo for making that information available. It's not like I'm hacking your information or anything.

So, according to your argument, if you should suddenly come across a pile of money sitting in the street its ok to use it for your own purposes? Who has created the way things are is irrelevant - its what you personally choose to do with the information.

That's not my point. My point is there's no way I can tell what your password is or any of your personal information. There's nothing insecure or private about it.
So I take it the plugin's working for you?

Jesse, thanks for the mention.
To get the Plugin working, you need to come to your 'blog from wherever you have a listing â say StumbleUpon, for example.
Guys, all of your privacy issues have been covered in my follow-up to Socialize Me! which you can read by clicking my name.
Jesse, if you're still stuck, go to my Facebook Page and have a look in the Discussions. A couple of issues have been dealt with there.
Speak soon and all the best!
